Yasanobu, the samurai from the title of this titillating romantic drama, isn’t allowed to use his katana on the enemy. Instead he is forced to use his kitchen knife to create classic Japanese cuisine, much to his chagrin. It pleases him even less that his wife Haru is the one who must teach him the soothing pleasures of cooking. Step by step, ingredient after ingredient, dish after dish, kitchen princess Haru starts her impossible quest to turn her husband’s warrior heart into that of a medieval chef. Gradually we learn that even in the Edo period in Japan the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
Its wealth of steaming cooking pots, fresh ingredients and sophisticated dramatic storytelling make Samurai Cooking the perfect movie to enjoy on Sunday afternoon after our annual Japanese lunch 😉
