Her Love Boils Bathwater

湯を沸かすほどの熱い愛

Our opening film this year was not for nothing the Japanese entry for the Oscars in 2017: Her Love Boils Bathwater won one award after another with this beautifully performed story about life and death, and life.

Since her husband disappeared into thin air, Futaba is a single mother who has to deal with all kinds of bullying at school. When she learns that she is terminally ill, she does not sit back for long: she is determined to strengthen her daughter’s self-confidence and does not shy away from any confrontation in order to leave the world fuller for her loved ones. Lead actress Rie Miyazawa, who Japan-Square loyalists will remember from our very first premiere, deservedly won several awards with this brilliant role. Her Love Boils Bathwater is an ode to love.

We can think of hundreds of reasons why we had to program this gem as the opening film, but this one was enough. You are welcome to come and tell us at the reception after the film that we were right.
