Tokyo and Saitama are like Ghent and West Flanders. Big city Tokyo looks down on the farmers of Saitama and in turn the inhabitants of Tokyo are seen as stubborn and self-righteous snobs. This comedy does not stop at some persistent prejudices, because a complete class struggle is at stake. Clichés, colorful costumes and witty overacting make this film complete. As if you are watching one of those over-the-top Japanese commercials, but for an hour and a half.
Fly Me To The Saitama is a must-see. The many nominations that the film has received at the Japan Academy Film Prizes prove this. The film recently also received the audience award from our friendly Dutch film festival Camera Japan.
AWARDS:
Audience Award Camera Japan and 13 nominations for Japan Academy Film Prizes, including Film of the Year and Director of the Year (award ceremony March 6, 2020)
