The Ballad of Narayama

As usual, we close our film festival – when it takes place in Studio Skoop – with a classic on Sunday afternoon. Of course, you decide for yourself when you will watch this film from your own home this year.

But we would like to give you the following: this The Ballad of Narayama is a true classic by Shohei Imamura. When it was released in 1983, this Japanese Golden Palm winner was already shown in Studio Skoop and we are now showing you the restored version.

In a remote village in 19th century Japan, everyone who turns 70 has to climb a nearby mountain to die. In The Ballad Of Narayama we follow the last days of a woman who is almost there.
