Hakkenden: Fiction and Reality

This year we present director Fumihiko Sori’s latest film Hakkenden: Fiction and Reality, an immersive blend of history and fantasy that blurs the lines between reality and story. Sori, known for films like Ping Pong and Fullmetal Alchemist, is renowned for his visually striking and narratively bold projects.

The film centers around Kyokutei Bakin, an author from the Edo period who dedicates his life to writing his epic novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. Over the course of 28 years, he works on the story of eight warriors, each connected by a magical prayer bead, who come together to break a curse on the Satomi clan. As Bakin becomes increasingly consumed by his tale, the boundaries between his own life and the fictional world he creates begin to fade. His conversations with artist Katsushika Hokusai add another layer to the story, while his growing blindness tests his dedication to the arts.

Hakkenden: Fiction and Reality is a visual spectacle and a tribute to one of Japan’s greatest literary works. Let yourself be swept away by a film that not only tells a historical narrative but also celebrates the power of imagination and perseverance.
