HAPPYEND

In the Tokyo of the near future, the threat of a devastating earthquake hangs over the everyday lives of its inhabitants like a dark cloud. Two best friends, on the brink of graduating from high school, play a prank on their school principal. What begins innocently leads to the installation of an all-seeing surveillance system. Under the pressure of constant monitoring and an increasingly grim political climate, the friends are forced to confront their differences.

Following RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: OPUS (2023), a film he produced in memory of his father, Neo Sora released his latest film in 2024. HAPPYEND, originally intended as his directorial debut, strikes a perfect balance between socially critical satire and a moving coming-of-age drama.

With stunning cinematography, an immersive soundtrack, and an exceptional eye for detail, Neo Sora draws the viewer into a claustrophobic dystopian world. In this layered story, the characters collide with their inner conflicts, forcing them to question their beliefs, desires, and identities in their search for happiness.
