Monsters Club

We are not yet far into 2012, but it promises to be a turbulent socio-economic year. The modern world has become a spectacle between desperate governments, their expectant citizens and those who will no longer accept it.

Ryoichi belongs to the latter category, but instead of reclaiming the centre of society, he occupies a snow-drenched mountaintop from which he sends letter bombs to CEOs in the capital. The story is reminiscent of that of the American Unabomber more than 20 years ago, but focuses mainly on the psychology of its main character.

The omnipresence of the white snowflakes that incessantly fall from the sky is in stark contrast to Ryoichi’s grey, dark soul. We gain more insight into this as the film progresses, partly thanks to the encounter with a bizarre figure and the equally mysterious appearance of his brother who died of suicide.

This is a beautifully shot masterpiece that you won’t be able to put down anytime soon, if only because of the questions it poses.
